Tootling in Tokyo

A computer, programmed to translate English into Russian and back into English, was given the expression "Out of sight, out of mind." The computer whirred. What came out? "Invisible insanity."

Translating is a tricky business. Here is how the Japanese in Tokyo translated traffic rules for the benefit of English-speaking drivers:

When a passenger of the foot heave in sight, tootle the horn, trumpet at him melodiuosly at first, but if he still obstacles your passage, tootle him with vigour, express by mouth the warning Hi, Hi! Beware the wandering horse that he shall not take fright as you pass him by. Do not explode the the exhaust box at him. Go soothingly by. Give big space to the festive dog that shall sport in the roadway. Go soothingly in the grease-mud as there lurks the skid-demon. Avoid the entanglement of the dog with your wheel spokes. Press the braking of the foot as you roll around the corner to save collapse and tie-up.

A long weekend...

It will be a long weekend ... It's a holiday on Monday, so long a time but with nothing to do... Boring, I tell you...

A Man of Music

At age five, he wrote an advanced concerto for the harpsichord. Before he was ten, he had published several violin sonatas and was playing the best of Handel and Bach from memory. Soon after his twelfth birthday, he composed and conducted his first opera. He was awarded an honorary appointment as concert-master with the Salzburg Symphony Orchestra and within a few years, was hailed as the pride of Salzburg.

When he died at the age of thirty-five, he had written forty-eight symphonies, forty-seven arias, duets, and quartets with orchestral accompaniment, and more than a dozen operas. He is credited with some 600 original compositions in all.

Even so, Johannes Chrysostomus Wolfgangus Amedeus Theophilus Mozart lived most of his life in poverty and died in obscurity. His sick widow seemed indifferent about his death. A few friends made it to the church for his funeral, but a storm prohibited their going to the graveside for his burial. The location of his grave thus became virtually impossible to identify. No shrine marks his resting place.

What is Mozart's legacy? Not the life he lived, but the music he gave. As with all of us, what we give to the world of our talent and creativity is what lasts.

A Thought

It is very nice to know
That I am made so neatly,
And that my little skin and bones
Cover me completely.
For I should blush for very shame
If when I was a-thinking
My skin and bones should come undone
And leave my mind a-blinking,
And all my wicked thoughts and feelings
Naked in the light.
Oh, I'm extremely glad to feel
My fastenings are tight.

Nicknames Unnicked

Many common words come from nicknames. What would the words look like if the real name was used instead?

Well, instead of tomboy, tomcat, tommyrot, you would have Thomasboy, Thomascat, and Thomasrot.

Instead of magpie you would have Margaretpie; instead of nanny goat, Ann goat; instead of paddy wagon, Patrick wagon; instead of chuck wagon, Charles wagon.

Jack would be John. You would have blackjohn, Johnknife, Union John, John-of-all-trades, hijohn, and skyjohn.

A brown betty would be a brown Elizabeth. A teddy bear would be a Theodore or Edward bear.

Creating a website

It is really very taxing to create a website. Although I created one from an existing website, all the modifications I made were really very tiring. But it's enjoyable. And the results you get are great.

Having Fun

Look at us. We were having so much fun when Sam took this picture. Even Basti enjoyed. I hope we will always stay this way. Posted by Hello

Fun Things To Do While Driving

1. Vary your vehicle's speed inversely with the speed limit.

2. Roll down your windows and blast out talk radio. Attempt to head bang.

3. At stop lights, eye the person in the next car suspiciously. With a look of fear, lock your doors.

4. Two words: Chicken suit.

5. Write the words "Help me" on your back window in red paint. The more it looks like blood, the better.

6. Have conversations, looking periodically at the passenger seat, when driving alone.

7. Laugh a lot. A whole lot.

8. Stop at the green lights.

9. Go at the red ones.

10. Occasionally wave a stuffed animal/troll doll/Barbie out your window or sunroof. Feel free to make it dance.

11. Eat food that requires silverware.

12. Pass cars, then drive very slowly.

13. Sing without having the radio on.

14. Honk frequently without motivation.

15. Wave at people often. If they wave back, offer an angry look and an obscene gesture.

16. Ask people for Grey Poupon. (?? Must be an American one)

17. Let pedestrians know who's boss.

18. Look behind you frequently, with a very paranoid look.

19. Restart your car at every stop light.

20. Hang numerous car-fresheners in the rear-view mirror. Talk to them, stroking them lovingly.

21. Lob burning things in the windows of smokers who throw their butts out the window.

22. While stopped at a light, pee out the window/sunroof onto other cars.

23. Paint your car with occult symbols.

24. Keep at least five cats in the car.

25. Have some passengers in the back who are having wild, noisy sex.

26. Root (cheer, not snuffle in the mud) for firetrucks.

27. Stop and collect roadkill.

28. Stop and pray to roadkill.

29. Throw Spam.

30. Get in the fast lane and gradually ... slow ... down ... to a stop. Then get out and watch the cars. Throw Spam at them.

Vile Vodka

There was once an English racehorse whose name was spelled Potoooooooo. It was pronounced Pot-8-o's - Potatoes. That is the way you should pronounce potoooooooo in the first line of this verse. But the ooooooooooo in the thrid line is harder to solve; when you count the o's, they come to eleven, and eleven o's do not make a sensible word. All right. Think again. There were eight o's run together in the first line, and eleven in the third. Eleven o's are more o's that eight o's, aren't they? Now all you have to do is think of a word that sounds like "more o's". (The word means "gloomy, ill-humored".)

Who of vodka distilled from potoooooooo partakes
Should take warning:
He'll be jolly at night, but ooooooooooo when he wakes
In the morning.

Googol

In the 1940's, an American mathematician named Edward Kasner asked his nine-year-old nephew, Milton Sirotta, to give a name to the number 1 followed by one hundred zeros. "Googol," suggested Milton. That unimaginably huge number is now officially a googol. And the unimaginably large number of 10 raised to the power googol - which means 1 followed by ten zeros squared a hundred times - is a googolplex.

Best Friends

These four young pretty people had dinner last night at Joe's @ LB. They haven't seen each other for quite a long time, at least the girl in pink and the boy in blue. The boy with the jacket and the girl in tan were classmates in medical school - they are doctors now. By the way, they are (l-r): Efren (that's me), Raymond Oliva, Delinia Lapitan, and Anna Merca.

It was a night of quite a few revelations, revelations by which some people will get really shocked, if not, surprised. Imagine not seeing each other for four years at the most. We missed a few friends because they were not available last night - Rosalyn Angeles, Artemus Eusebio, and Marcos Valdez. I hope next time the list will be complete. Until then...

Asleep...

Mimi was sleeping when she arrived here at Genesis. That was around 10 this morning. She woke up lunchtime and was eating her lunch when she puked. Too bad...

Punctuation puzzles

Everything in the sentence that follows is right except for the punctuation. Change the punctuation, without shifting a single word, so that the sentence will make sense.

When I was looking out of the window, I saw a fire engine climbing a wall; I saw a swallow drinking soda; I saw a baby bigger than a house; I saw the sun as green as cheese; I saw the grass drinking beer; I saw two men as drunk as I.

~~~
The meaning of the two sentences below changes with the punctuation:
A clever dog knows its master.
A clever dog knows it's master.
Do not break your bread, or roll in your soup.
Do not break your bread or roll in your soup.
Basti
This is Basti. He is Sam's baby brother. I can tell you he is a very naughty boy who always wants to pull your hair or give you a slap on the face. Nevertheless, you will still love him because he is always cheerful and is ready to give you a nice smile. Posted by Hello
Here's a comic strip for you! Posted by Hello
Laugh now!!!
The world always looks brighter when viewed with a smile:
Laugh a little now and then
It brightens life a lot;
You can see the brighter side
Just as well as not.
Don't go mournfully around,
Gloomy and forlorn;
Try to make your fellow men
Glad that you were born.
(Author Unknown)
It actually takes more muscles to frown than it does to smile. Beyond that, laughter has other very practical therapeutic results. It sends endorphins to the brain, which brings about a sense of well-being and calm. It energizes the body. It releases one's mind from depression and turns it toward goals, dreams, and triumphs. It makes time go by faster and menial chores more enjoyable.
Furthermore, when shared with friends and family, laughter builds relationships. At the end of a busy, tiring day, a happy home is a refuge for each family member, young and old.
Find a reason to enjoy a hearty laugh today!
A happy heart makes the face cheerful, but heartache crushes the spirit.
Proverbs 15:13 NIV
Tongue Twister Limericks
A canner exceedingly canny
One morning remarked to his granny
"A canner can can
Anything that he can,
But a canner can't can a can, can he?"
~~~

A tutor who tooted the flute
Tried to tutor two tooters to toot,
Said the two to the tutor,
"Is it harder to toot, or
To tutor two tooters to toot?"

Bet you didn't know that!

In 1906, when people travelled by horse and buggy, the average speed of the traffic in midtown New York City was eleven and a half miles an hour. By 1972 the average speed of automobile traffic was down to eight miles an hour. It is probably less than that today.

Sobe Family

The process could either be simple or not that simple. It could be complex or more than complex. Boonai spins the tale and sets it straight.
Have you ever wondered how the SOBE FAMILY came into existence? What's with the name and why? I bet you haven't. I bet it never crossed your road. Not that I blame you, who cares about it anyway. But it's such a provocative and fascinating question that I'm utterly amazed that no one has ever thought about it before. It's probably one of the world's greatest mysteries and yet not one historian, scientist nor clergyman has ever ventured to investigate and clear things up with the populace. How can this be, when SOBE FAMILY have so much consequence on our lives? Indeed, it affects our emotions, our thoughts, our appetites, the very way we conduct our day to day communion with our fellowmen but still we dont have one single clue as to the SOBE FAMILY's origins. Not one person has dared to look for an answer to this riddle.
Well, maybe I'm wrong about this. Maybe some of you have indeed asked the same questions that I have. If that is so I am grateful, mah friend. For I feel safe in the knowledge that I am not alone in this dilemma. That someone out there has the guts to at least wonder.
But that, I think, is where the similarity ends. For I am not just a girl who wonders. I am a girl who does. And just what did "the girl who does" do, you ask? Why, I am the only person on earth that I know of who has dared to seek out the answers to all my questions. And all the things I have learned will make a man shudder to death just thinking about them. Now I'm revealing everything in the story I am about to tell. A story which I have kept inside me, burning like a hot stove. A story which will probably shake the foundations of Christianity as we know it, as well as shatter many unquestioned myths in our world's history. A story that will drive any man crazy.
As I remember, it all started back in November 22, 2002. It was a Friday night. Mau told me that she'd be going out with Ethel and Kathy. And where? Sa SOBE! (meron pa bang iba?!) Then i said, "Ah... e... sige!" Mau and Jun, in their blue Mitsubishi Gallant, picked us up at around 8:30 pm. And then we were there. We ordered drinks. San Mig light pa lang nun. Wala pag strong ice. Pero super dry sa min ni Jun. (We never liked the taste of San mig lite anyway) The band played and then... WHOA! All together we said, "Ang gwapo ng vocalist!" All night long we watched how this goddamn good-looking vocalist woo the crowd by his good looks and nice voice. After 3 bottles of beer had already kicked in, I finally had the guts to ask this gwapong vocalist his name. Through a tissue paper I wrote, "Wat's d name of the male vocalist?" Upon receipt, the gwapong vocalist said, "Richard po. Richard." Aha! Richard pala ha! We enjoyed the night away. I think we had 5 rounds of beer that night. Hindi ko na maalala. Lasing na ko nun e. Lakas ng tama sa min nung Richard na yun ah! And then there was the last song for the night. Mau, already sober by that time, insisted we stay. Hoping that maybe we could ask the gwapong vocalist his number. After paying the bill, Mau told the waiter, "Pag di mo pinalapit sa min si Richard, hindi kami aalis." Having no choice, the waiter did what he was told. Tapos ayan na yung gwapong vocalist! Richard approached us and then of course we introduced ourselves. We realized mas gwapo pala siya sa malapit. Richard exchanged numbers with Kathy. I also remembered he said,"May anak na ko." Pu cares?! Gwapo ka naman. No problem.
That was the start of the new beginning. Until then, we started to have regular gimmicks, I think twice a month. And the usual place? SOBE! Well. We also had some out-of-san pablo escapades like Studio 1 in Alabang and Ratsky Malate. But I'd rather not talk more about it. Baka uminit lang ulo ko. May kasama kasi tayo nung "thrasher".
Every now and then, we enjoyed every Reborn gig. Mapa-sobe, mapa-zyppzone. Richard would inform us thru text about their gigs. Di nagtagal parang naging ka-close na namin yung gwapong vocalist na yun.
Then pano nakasali si Lloyd? Eto po ang nangyari. It was October 31, 2003. Halloween night at Zyppzone. Two bands played that night - Layag laya and Reborn. Syempre present kami. Todo matching-attire pa. That was the night nung pinakilala sa min ni Richard si Lloyd. And, all-together now, ANG GWAPO PALA NUN! Hindi kasi namin siya masyado napapansin dahil na kay Richard lang lagi attention namin. That night I realized na crush ko si Lloyd. Ah! Hindi pala! Mahal ko na pala siya! Gusto ko siya i-friend simula nun kaso mukang shy guy yung gwapong bahistang yun. Hindi mo maitindihan kung suplado lang ba sa personal or shy lang talaga. I really wanted to make friends with him but I cant figure out how. Thank God there is this Friendster.com. I asked Richard about Lloyd's email ad kaya lang di daw nya alam. I thought I would lose hope na pero good thing there is this user-search thing in friendster. I ask Richard Lloyd's surname and... VOILA! Instantly, me and Lloyd became "friendsters". It is also through Friendster where I met Helen. I found Helen's page in Lloyd's friends' list. Until then, Helen, Lloyd and I have somehow became friends. Kinda close. Kinda open din.
Isn't it amazing that I've managed to get this far and still not saying anything about my main topic? It's a trick I learned in college. Anyway, now that you're already aware of the time frame that we are in, you may already have a better picture of the origin itself.
Bakit nga ba SOBE FAMILY? Bueno, eto, magkaliwanagan na tayo. The name came about last September 2003. Sobe's anniversary. We were regular customers back then and we insisted to be there during the anniversary celebration. Everybody was eager to celebrate except for Ethel, for no reasons at all, and Mau, who was still pregnant for her second baby back then. Pero tumuloy pa rin kami kahit na we were only three because Jun said in his text message, "We're already part of the Sobe family kaya di tayo pede mawala dun."
I guess by now you've already guessed why we got that weird name. If you guessed that SOBE FAMILY originated from that text message, congratulations. Give yourself a pat on the back. If you guessed correctly then you have indeed been following this story closely.
Everytime I got to organize a Reborn gig gimmick, I always emphasize SOBE FAMILY in my text messages. And then there is this yahoo group which of course is named SOBE FAMILY. Well, nandyan na yan e. Might as well, pangatawanan na!
That's it! Getz nyo na? Getz nyo na?! Ahh... Lokah lokah! nyihihi....
